North Laos is my personal favorite - it offers endless beautiful green fields, trekking opportunities, hill tribe villages, boat trips, caving and tubing :-)
Jumbo guesthouse is located in Hongsa, Sayaboury Province in north Laos. Get off the beaten track in Hongsa where you can meet the elephants and take tours in a non-touristy place. Sayaboury province has been host to the annual Elephant festival in Laos. In 2012, the festival was held from February 17-19. Hongsa is known for its working elephants.
Monica is the owner and speaks English and German. All the rooms have good mattresses, European blankets and mosquito net. Jumbo Guesthouse can arrange elephant rides or treks from 1-4 days. Her guesthouse has received good reviews from other travelers on Tripadvisor.

How to get to Hongsa: From Luang Prabang there are boats to Tha Suang. From Tha Suang, take a songthaew to Hongsa, which takes one hour and cost about 30,000 kip.
From Huay Xai, take the slow boat to Pakbeng. Then take another slow boat to Tha Suang, which takes about 1,5 hour.
