Are you looking for a beautiful beach in Thailand?
Thong Nai Pan Yai is my favorite beach on Koh Phangan! :-D
You will fall in love with its clean, white sand and the crystal clear water. And best of all: its laid-back atmosphere - no hassle and the only noise you can hear is the hippies.
Thong Nai Pan is divided into two beaches: Thong Nai Pan Yai (Yai means big) and Thong Nai Pan Noi (small).
Where: northeast of Koh Phangan. If you're in Thongsala, take the Songthaew (200-250 B per person when full Songthaew). Otherwise, if you want to go right away and it's not a full Songthaew, you have to expect to pay 500 B per person.
Price per night: 400-1500 B
When I last visited Thong Nai Pan Yai in December 2007, their cheapest bungalow was very simple. But that was OK, because we only wanted basic accommodation. Pen's basic bungalows are just 20 meters from the shoreline, while the nicer ones are right on the beach!
There's a restaurant next to the beach where they serve Thai and Western dishes (100-200 B). And if you want to surf online, they have internet as well in their mini-mart.
Here are some other suggestions on bungalows and rooms in Thong Nai Pan - click on the links to read reviews.

Eat cheap and delicious Thai meals at Som's Restaurant. It's run by a sweet family and serve excellent Thai meals. I especially enjoyed their fish ball soup (20 B).
Where: by the main road
Craving for some cheap Western food?
If you walk on the road behind Pingjun's and head towards Nu Bar, you'll see a small restaurant on your left side.
They had excellent pizza baguettes for 50 B! While eating, you can choose a book from their small selection. It's quite possible to borrow books.
Su's Cafe and Bakery is worth a visit because of their homemade pizzas, German specials like Schnitzel and fruit shakes! Vegetarians and vegans will enjoy veggie specialties like noodle bowls and healthy juices at The Vegan Cafe. They also offer yoga classes in the morning (closed on Sundays). One drop-in class cost 300 B.
Find more about the yoga classes here. (opens in a new window)
Luna Lounge is probably the most popular restaurant of both beaches, due to the fusion food and service! Expect tapas, BBQ food, fish dishes (like prawns dipped in cognac), Thai food and more.
The place is infamous for its cocktails and desserts like coconut pannacotta and chocolate mousse ;-)
Besides sun bathing, take a stroll and visit the most beautiful beach on the island - Thong Nai Pan Noi beach!
If you're staying at Thong Nai Pan Yai and want some exercise, head north. Then walk over the hill through the jungle…and voila.. there you are!
We walked over the hill once and it wasn't hard to find the way. I remember that we had to walk through a resort's property, but I honestly don't remember the exact route, so ask around. If you're lazy, take a 5 minutes Songthaew ride.
