Looking for a place to stay in Vang Vieng?
If you're looking for budget rooms, you'll find them in downtown Vang Vieng - lined up in a row.
If up-scale accommodation is more your taste, head for the river bank. The number of guesthouses in Vang Vieng has exploded the last couple of years. Number of hotels are also increasing.
I didn't try many guesthouses in Vang Vieng when I visited in Nov 2007.
Here are the guesthouses where I spent my nights.
Enjoy!
Price per night: 40,000 Kip
Clean room with attached bathroom and hot showers. And a nice balcony where you can enjoy the view of Vang Vieng.
Even better, Phoukam has an excellent location (50 meters from the main road).
If you're heading for Vientiane, they can arrange minibus transport for you. They also have a restaurant, and the local food they serve taste good, the Western food was alright.
Price per night: from $7
Single and double rooms with fan cost $7, while single and double rooms with air-con cost $ 15.
On the ground floor, they have small double rooms with fan.
Our room was very simple, tiny and clean enough - when we wanted to take a shower, there was only a bucket of water. It felt like I was in Palolem (Goa) again.
The bathroom in our room was in need of a good scrub.
Please watch out for bed bugs...!
I had to wake up in the middle of the night to pull out my duvet cover, so I could protect myself from these tiny monsters. My Australian friend had to use her t-shirts as protection.
When bed bugs bite you, it feels like someone's tapping you with a needle, over and over again.
I don't know if they still have bed bugs (we were here in Nov 2007).
Reader's update April 09, 2012: "I was just at Amphone guesthouse in Vang Vieng with a
friend for 2 nights (we had 2 fan rooms, 50,000 kip each, nice shower) and no bedbugs (...).
We didn't run into any our entire trip backpacking around Laos (this was my 8th visit there)
- Karen Stafford
Price per night: from 30 000 kip (mixed/girl dorm), 70,000 kip (double bed)
Other budget accommodations to check out in Vang Vieng is Spicy Lao Backpackers a great place for backpackers with free movies and breakfast, and social gatherings in the evening.
The dorms are nothing to brag about though. Minimal space and shabby toilets.
But if you're just looking for basic accommodation, this is where you should go. A big plus for the social atmosphere!
Spicy Lao Backpackers was voted as the best hostel by Hostelworld in 2009.
