Visiting Hong Kong and wondering if you need a tourist visa?

Fortunately, Hong Kong is one of the countries in Asia that don't require a tourist visa from most nationalities - this only applies for a limited time.

Nationalities who can stay in Hong Kong for 14 days without a tourist visa: Albania, Algeria, Benin, Bhutan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Burkina Faso, Central African Public, Chad, Comoros, Croatia, Djibouti, Gabon, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Haiti, India, Lesotho, Macedonia, Madagascar, Mali, Mauritania, Mongolia, Philippines, Russia, Rwanda, Ukraine.

Nationalities who can stay in Hong Kong for 30 days without a tourist visa: Bahrain, Bolivia, Cape Verde, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Indonesia, Jordan, Kuwait, Oman, Paraguay, Peru, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Thailand, Tunisia, Yemen.

Nationalities who can stay in Hong Kong for 90 days without a tourist visa: Andorra, Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda (90), Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bahamas, Barbados, Belgium, Belize, Bermuda, Botswana, Brazil, Britain (British Overseas Territories citizens, British Overseas citizens, British subjects and British Protected persons), Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Cayman islands, Chile, Colombia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, Egypt, Estonia, Fiji, Finland, France, Gambia, Germany, Gibraltar, Greece, Greenland, Grenada, Guyana, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Kenya, Kiribati, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malawi, Malaysia, Maldives, Malta, Mauritius, Mexico, Monaco, Namibia, Nauru, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Seychelles, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Swaziland, Sweden, Switzerland, Tanzania, Tonga, Turkey, USA, Venezuela, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

British citizens can stay in Hong Kong for up to 180 days.

Officially, the tourist visa is called 'visitor visa'. You'll notice this when you're browsing the website of Hong Kong Immigration Department.

Remember, on a tourist visa you're not allowed to work or study.

If you belong to one of the countries above and you don't need to apply for a tourist visa, you should still:

  • Have a passport valid for 6 months after departure.

    Example: your departure date from Hong Kong is June 01, 2012. Your passport should be valid until Dec 01, 2012.

Extension of visitor visa:
Hong Kong Visa Requirements

According to Hong Kong Immigration Department, applications regarding extension of visitor visa should be made before or within 7 days from expiry of the limit of the stay. Foreigners can submit an application to one of the Immigration offices in Hong Kong.

The offices in Kowloon:

East Kowloon office: Level 2, Sceneway Plaza, Sceneway Garden, 1-17 Sceneway Road, Lam Tin

West Kowloon office: M/Floor, Yau Ma Tei Carpark Building, 250 Shanghai Street, Yau Ma Tei

Documents to bring: Hong Kong visa requirements

  • Your passport

  • Evidence to support your need to stay longer in Hong Kong, for example onward or return tickets, evidence showing adequate fund etc.

  • A completed form called ID91

If you overstay, you're liable on conviction to a maximum fine of HK$50,000 and to imprisonment for 2 years. Check out chapter 115, Laws of Hong Kong.
